Mimu's Message.com

from Sept 14, 2003:

Four score and…well, a long time ago, a group of people came to the continent of North America in search of religious freedom from the Church of England. They were called Pilgrims, or Puritans. Their goal was admirable: to create a pure Christian utopia. Their methods, however, were a little off. They were constantly filled with the terror of hellfire and the anxiety of following the sometimes-legalistic Puritan rules. There was no such thing as grace and any kind of fun was considered sinful.

I am actually a descendent of a Puritan elder, a man named Brewster. I don’t know much about him personally, except that he made the journey on the Mayflower and he had two children named Love and Wrestling (yes, that’s completely true). However, I am fairly certain that, as an elder, he was a strict Puritan. So this is what I have to say to him and his family: LIGHTEN UP! Philippians 4:4 says “Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again, Rejoice!” I definitely respect the Puritans for really trying to keep the faith, but being happy and having fun is okay! Not only is it okay, it’s FITTING in the Christian lifestyle, as long as we do it the right way (i.e., getting drunk is not okay, playing ultimate Frisbee is). Sometimes as Christians it is easy to get bogged down under all the “rules” we feel are upon us, but what we really should feel is joy that God loves us and has chosen us as his children. So rejoice already! Don’t make me say it twice.

School’s back in; your brains are warmed up. Therefore, it is now time for the first ever Mimu’s Message POP QUIZ! Don’t be scared; it’s only one question:

1. What do you want to know?

Now, don’t misunderstand me here. I can’t tell you what it is you want to know. It’s me asking the questions here and you answering. So what do you want to know? I want to know what career I should pursue. Here’s some more sample answers from my lovely, anonymous assistants:

-I want to know if Lauren wants to go to Pochi + General Tso's with Sam, Joe and Jay on Saturday at 6:30 in the pm.
-I want to know everything.
-I want to know that I'm not throwing away my life, that I'm not wasting what little precious time I have on this earth, and that when I leave this world people will attend my funeral and actually mean the nice things they say because I made a difference, no matter how inconsequential, in their lives.
-I want to know which months have 31 days and which ones don’t.

Wait, one more…

-I want to know Christ and the power of is resurrection and the fellowship of his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, and so, somehow, to attain to the resurrection from the dead. (Philippians 3:13)

Hm. Interesting. Are you sure you still want to stick to your original answer?

Just something to ponder.
